                    Inquiry Based Approach

Definition of inquiry:

Inquiry is the process initiated by the students or the teachers that moves the the students from their current level of understanding to a new and deeper level of understanding.

 

  • There are 3 kinds of inquiry: Teacher- directed inquiry, Teacher-student shared inquiry and Student-directed inquiry( Resources: .PBL book).

  • Teacher-directed inquiry:starting with the familiar and comfortable ways to engage students’ thinking and responses.  This makes teachers easier to identify objectives,  types of questions, resources, strategies that students might find as a problematic situations, and the assessment.

  • Objectives is planned as what teacher specifically want students to do, not what the teacher will say or do.

  • Extend to what interest students to focus on the certain topic, and guide them into their prior-knowledge and make connections to their lives and surroundings (consideration: what topics are important for understanding the subject? which topics have societal interest?  â†’ how people live: work, art, religion, music and can relate to cultural concerns; Geology and geography; economic conditions and personal relevance; history)

  • REtain information and understand it-->students search for identifying things, causes,comparing/contrasting and come up with a simple conclusions.

  • Teachers provide some questions.

  • Design long term strategies as create learning experiences such as pose problem and resolve it, design product, experiment → means learning experiences to retain in objectives, understanding and applying concepts, ideas and skills.

  • Teacher-Student Shared Inquiry: shared decision making process, students have more say.

  • Teachers can do KWL to know students’ needs, and also O-T-Q or Observe -Think-Question. it derives from investigation or observation; relate to what students already know; curios by asking questions.

  • Be ready with independent research,anticipated and unpredictable directions, students’ curiosity.

  • Other strategies: modelling, graphic organizers, small group inquiry/research, and so on.

  • What students have learnt: does it reasonable? Practically-can it work out for…? Significant-the conclusions is meaningful

  • How it applies: related to other subjects/life beyond school

  • New questions.

  • Students-DIrected Inquiry: students or a small group of students pose a questions they really want to work on.

  • Defining their own issues, Setting their research agenda separately from class.

  • Planning, monitoring and evaluating.  Teachers checking the process.

Indicators of inquiry are:

  • exploring, wondering and questioning

  • experimenting and playing with possibilities

  • making connections between previous learning and current learning

  • making predictions and acting purposefully to see what happens

  • collecting data and reporting findings

  • clarifying existing ideas and reappraising perceptions of events

  • deepening understanding through the application of a concept

  • making and testing theories

  • researching and seeking information

  • taking and defending position

  • solving problems in a variety of ways

 

Environment of inquiry

  • the educator’s roles is to provoke puzzlement, stimulate curiosity and rely upon the children’s sense of wonder.

  • the children’s role is to create a community of inquirers where they bounce ideas off each other, hear and value other perspective, and learn from each other in a classroom setting and beyond.

  • the school’s role is provide socio cultural context for different needs of children’s emotional and spiritual well-being.

  • socio-emotional environment is the culture of the class where children can feel comfortable enough to express themselves.

  • physical environment is the the organized school environment where children can have opportunity to investigate, both indoors and outdoors.

 

Assessments of inquiry for young children:

  • observation

  • documentation

  • conversations

  • children reflection

  • performance assessment

  • process-focused assessment

 

Strategies of inquiry

  • inquiring through read-alouds and responses

  • inquiring through browsing and viewing

  • inquiring through organising ideas

  • inquiring through play

  • inquiring through drama

  • inquiring through research
