What might support students to learn Addition and Subtraction?
Using Ten –based blocks are really helpful to figure out the number value.
The Place Value House are also help students to place number value in the right place. For instance, 34562 = 4 should be place in the thousand place, and read as thousand. Some games are given to make students atrracted and challanged, sort of domino cards and group quiz.
Domino cards games could be made by the teacher. Each students get 1 card , and ones the first students read the clue, so students who hold the right answer will show the number, and read anouther clue. It is continuing until all the cards and clue has been shown and answered
.
The usage of smartboard is also beneficial to describe how place and value is working, addition and subtraction is calculated with or withough regrouping. Number cards that are distributed to students can be used to order number from greater to the less number.
The concept of multiplication is also important because instead of adding things for more than six times, we can just multiply it. For example, we bought 13 packs of juices, and each pack is worth Rp.7.500,-. Instead of addingRp. 7.500,- for like 13 times, we will just be multiplying it by 13. It is one way of computing certain things easier.
The other concept is division. If addition, subtraction, and multiplication is important to our lives, I also thought that division might be important to our daily lives. We can use division when having groupings in our class, we will be dividing our class into 4 groups and the class has 32 students, in one group, we will be having 8 members. That is a simple step to an easier computation.
What happens in the PYP 4A classroom?
Students start to learn multiplication and division by having a test of their priorknowledge. How do they know about the concept of multiplication and how do they use it in their daily life.
Some of students need more time to memorize the times table and to understand the concept of multiplication.
Teacher review how is multiplication is working in our live by doing an experiment. I show them wire and challange them how to measure it without metric scale. I only use 30cm long of ruler, and ask them the problem using multiplication. One of student come up with the idea, that we need to repeat the ruler some times, then we multiply it till we get the length. Then we discuss about different ways to operate multiplication (arrays, repeated addition, skip counting and grouping).

Math is applied in the real life.
Math affects every single part of our daily lives, every day. We simply use addition in our lives daily, like for example, shopping, we shop for almost five dresses that are worth Rp.25.000,- and then we add it so we can pay for the amount that we need to pay.
To all students, learn to appreciate math because without it, life won’t go on. Even a single piece of pie, we use math. In every building, we use math. In following a recipe we still use math. Shockingly, students don’t appreciate math because in some ways, math is hard for them. Why? There is only two reasons in that question, it is either they did not listen to their teacher and they’re lazy enough to study math or they really don’t like numbers.

This unit, student learn to be advanced in the skills to add and subtract. They learn from understanding the number and place value. Such as ten thousands, thousands, or even the 4th garders review the value of ones, tens and hundreds.

Why is place value important?
Place value isimportant because it helps you understand the meaning of a number.
Place value refers to the value of the digit based on its position. Place value is a concept that is difficult for young learners. Understanding place value fully requires many hands on experiences.

What is happening in the PYP 4A classroom?
When they learn about place value, they also being taught how to write the number in words, and compare the number using the < and > signs. Students are also learn about ordering number as descending and ascending. As they are getting more understanding of using palce and value, they learn to calculate number using addition and subtraction in 5 digits number. Students know how to regroup the number based on place and value when they do the math operation.
At the end, students are given some word problems and they are also required to create their own word problem and solve them. Fisrtly, teacher encourage students to brainstorm some words that might be used when solving the problems. Then explain the strategy to comprehend the words are given to students as well. Some worksheets are given after the discussion about solving some word problems on the board. This skill connected to how math is applied in the real life.

What after that?
Based on the pre-assessment, students are divided into 3 groups based on ther ability level. In 3 different level, students work on different task:
1: Factor puzzles, snake and ladder ,
2: choco block and star factor,
3: multiplication pyramid and matching cards
PYP 4A is coming to the multiplication with multi digit (3 digits time 2 digits number). The provocation activity to Multi -digit multiplication is by watching a multiplication video. Then students and teachers are solving some problems together on board, and they might do some worksheet by temselves. Sometimes, we check the answers togetehr on board, so everyone know their mistakes.
To challange them with varied strategies to solve multiplication of multi digit numbers, I involve students to find the other ways in a small group. Then we come up with some strategies; place value, rounding up and rounding down.
At the end, students are challanged to solve word problems and they also need to make up their own word problems. There are some learning experiences that i give them, such as brainstorming the related words, and analyze the word problem suing CUBES strategy, and group works where everyone can share ideas and enrich knowledge and skills each other.
What might support students to learn Multiplication and Division?
Some card games are used, such as star factor, multiplication pyramid, snake and ladder, online math games, matching cards, and so on. See the pictures of each strategy displayed. Students are challanged by different kinds of games and worksheets. Instead of practice on times table and division fatcs, students also need to solve problems that relates to the real life. They ctart to analyse the problems through the keywords, and think of the strategy. Then they come up with the calculation and conclusion.
SBrainstoming related words with multiplication and division might enrich their vocabularies to strat understand the word problems. This might help them to create their own word problems as we required after all.

Students create word problem/s that represents math operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide).
Students may create a scrap book, or type in Power point, or make a model. It is depend on students' idea and interest).

What happens with the Basic facts in PYP 4A?
Students in PYP 4A has different level of ability, so divide them into 3 groups is one of great strategie to optimize the learning engagament in the classroom.



This activity is given to some students who still needs to practice times table 1-10. So they match the multiplication cards.
Students who are in the middle level are given the game to find the factor of multiplication.
These students need to solve the complecated problems. They get a number from the shuffled cards and they have to multiply the number on board. They are learning to multiply with 2 or 3 digit numbers.


CELEBRITY HEAD GAME
one student has a number on his/her head that she/he doesn't kno, then his/her friends give clue about the number so that the student can answer.

PRIME AND COMPOSITE NUMBER
Prime number is number that can be multiplied by 1 and its number only, and Composite number is numbers that can be multiplied by any number or the factors.
TO TEACH STUDENTS THESE CONCEPT:
Students are to compare between 2 numbers, so that they come up with the idea that the number have some factors and the other is not.
They are given task to explore composite and prime number as their homework. GIve them times table is beneficial to help students with some difficulties in multiplication, and number chart 1-100 is given to others to guide them.
